How common is persistent bone pain in osteosarcoma?

Osteosarcoma begins in bone and may cause an ache that gradually becomes more noticeable. The painful area can be tender, swollen, or stiff, and discomfort may continue during rest or disturb sleep. The knee region, upper arm, or another long-bone area may be involved, although the location varies.

Bone pain does not establish its cause. Sports injuries, growth-related problems, infection, and other conditions can produce similar symptoms. A clinician may compare both sides, check movement and swelling, and arrange imaging or other tests when the pattern needs explanation.

Book an appointment for pain that persists, worsens, returns without a clear injury, or is associated with swelling or a firm lump. Record the location, timing, night symptoms, and effect on movement. Mention any recent injury, fever, weight change, or treatment already tried.

Until you are assessed, avoid repeatedly loading the painful area if that makes symptoms worse. Do not assume that improvement with pain relief explains the underlying cause; persistent or recurring symptoms still deserve review.

Get urgent medical help for sudden severe pain, an obvious deformity, inability to use the limb, rapidly increasing swelling, or new weakness or numbness. These signs may indicate a fracture or another problem requiring immediate assessment.

What could explain this pain and swelling? Would an X-ray or another scan help? Should I change sports or weight-bearing activity while waiting? What symptoms should prompt urgent review?
