How common is persistent bone pain in bone metastases?

Bone metastases are cancer deposits that have spread to bone from another part of the body. They can disturb the normal balance of bone breakdown and repair, irritate nearby tissues, and make an affected area weaker. Pain may be deep, ongoing, worse at night, or aggravated by movement. Some people also have tenderness or reduced function.

Persistent bone pain has other explanations, including injury, arthritis, infection, and non-cancerous bone conditions. The pain pattern cannot establish whether metastases are present. Clinicians consider a person's cancer history, examination, and imaging together.

Contact your oncology or medical team about new, persistent, or changing bone pain, especially when it affects sleep, walking, lifting, or another usual activity. Describe the site, timing, severity, and movement triggers. Ask whether imaging or a change in the pain plan is needed, and follow advice about protecting a vulnerable bone.

Get urgent help for sudden severe bone pain, a snap or deformity, or inability to stand or use a limb. New leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe back pain may signal pressure near the spine and needs emergency assessment.

Ask whether the painful area needs imaging, whether it may be vulnerable to fracture, and which activities are safe. Ask about pain medicines, warning symptoms to watch for, and who to contact outside scheduled visits.
