How common is blurred vision in stroke?

A stroke can interrupt blood flow to areas that process vision or control eye movements. A person may describe blurred sight, loss of part of the visual field, double vision, or difficulty seeing from one eye. Other possible signs include facial drooping, arm weakness, numbness, speech difficulty, poor balance, confusion, or a severe sudden headache. Blurred vision also has non-stroke causes, but sudden onset requires emergency assessment.

Call emergency services immediately if blurred vision begins suddenly or occurs with any neurological symptom. Note the time the person was last known to be well, because clinicians will need that detail. Keep them safe from falls, do not let them drive, and do not give food or drink if swallowing seems impaired. Do not wait to see whether the symptoms settle.

Emergency help is needed for new blurred or lost vision, especially with weakness, facial asymmetry, slurred speech, confusion, severe dizziness, collapse, or a sudden severe headache. It is still important to seek emergency help if symptoms improve or disappear, since temporary neurological symptoms can also need urgent evaluation. A new vision change that is not sudden should still be discussed promptly with a clinician.
