How common is blurred vision in dry eye?

A smooth tear film covers the front of the eye and helps focus light. When tears evaporate too quickly or are not produced in enough quantity, that surface becomes uneven. Vision may then look hazy, especially during reading, screen use, driving, or other tasks that reduce blinking.

Dry-eye blur often comes and goes and may improve after blinking or using recommended lubricating drops. Burning, grittiness, watering, redness, and light sensitivity can occur alongside it. Similar visual symptoms can have other causes, including a change in prescription, contact-lens irritation, infection, or a problem inside the eye.

Take regular breaks from close-up screens, blink fully and often, and avoid direct air from fans or air-conditioning. If you wear contact lenses, remove them when symptoms begin and follow the advice given by your eye-care professional. Use eye drops recommended for you, particularly if you need them repeatedly.

Arrange an eye examination if the blur continues, interferes with reading or driving, or does not settle with simple measures. An examination can check the tear film, eyelids, cornea, and vision so that treatment matches the cause.

Seek urgent care for sudden or marked loss of vision, severe eye pain, a very red eye, new flashes or many floaters, a curtain-like shadow, or significant light sensitivity. Seek prompt advice if blurred vision follows an eye injury or chemical exposure. Do not drive while your vision is unclear.
