How common is blood in urine in prostate cancer?

Blood may be seen in the toilet bowl, on tissue, or only under laboratory testing. In prostate cancer, bleeding can occur when nearby urinary tissues are affected. More frequent explanations include infection, stones, prostate enlargement, and bladder or kidney conditions. Because the same symptom can come from different places in the urinary tract, it needs a clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Arrange a medical appointment after any visible blood in urine, even if it happens once or disappears. Your clinician may review urinary symptoms, medications that affect bleeding, and your health history, then arrange urine testing, blood tests, imaging, or referral when indicated. Bring a list of medicines and mention whether there are clots, pain, or changes in your urine flow.

Seek urgent care if you cannot urinate, are passing clots, develop severe lower abdominal or flank pain, feel faint, or have fever and chills. These symptoms can require prompt treatment whether or not cancer is involved. Do not drive yourself if you feel weak or light-headed.
