How common is blood in urine in kidney stones?

A stone can scrape or irritate the lining of the kidney or ureter as it moves, allowing a small amount of blood into the urine. Pain may start suddenly in the back or side and travel toward the lower abdomen or groin. Nausea, restlessness, and urinary urgency can accompany the pain. Blood can also occur without dramatic pain, and other conditions remain possible.

Contact a clinician to report any visible blood in urine. They may test urine for blood or infection and use imaging to look for a stone or another cause. Keep a note of when pain began, where it moves, whether you have passed grit, and any medicines taken. Avoid taking more than the labelled dose of non-prescription pain medicine.

Seek urgent care for uncontrolled pain, fever or chills, repeated vomiting, very little urine, inability to pass urine, or worsening weakness. A stone can sometimes block urine flow, and infection alongside blockage needs prompt treatment. Get medical advice quickly if bleeding is heavy or you pass clots.

Ask whether imaging is needed, whether infection has been excluded, what pain plan is safest for you, and how you will know if the stone has passed. If you have had stones before, ask whether any analysis or prevention plan is appropriate.
