How common is blood in urine in kidney cancer?

Blood may be visible as pink, red, or cola-coloured urine, or it may only be found on a urine test. A growth in the kidney can irritate or bleed into the urine-collecting system. However, infection, stones, injury, medicines, and problems elsewhere in the urinary tract can also cause this symptom. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Contact a clinician promptly if you notice blood in your urine, even if it clears. They may ask about pain, fever, urinary changes, smoking history, medicines, and previous urinary problems. Assessment can include a urine sample, blood tests, and imaging or a camera examination of the bladder when appropriate. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the clinician advising you tells you to.

Seek urgent medical care if you cannot pass urine, pass clots, have severe flank or abdominal pain, feel faint, or have fever with shaking chills. These features can need prompt treatment regardless of the underlying cause. Visible bleeding without these symptoms still deserves timely medical review.
