How common is blood in stool in haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels around the anus or lower rectum. They may bleed when stool passes over them, especially with straining or hard stools. The blood may be bright red on toilet paper, on the stool surface, or in the toilet bowl. A small amount can still look alarming because blood spreads in water. This pattern cannot identify the cause on its own.

Arrange a medical review for new, recurrent, or unexplained rectal bleeding. Note when it happens, its colour, whether there is pain or itching, and any change in bowel habit. Avoid straining, drink enough fluid, and discuss safe ways to soften stool if constipation is contributing. Do not assume a previous haemorrhoid diagnosis explains every later episode.

Seek urgent medical care if bleeding is heavy, continues, comes with faintness, severe abdominal pain, black tar-like stool, fever, or marked weakness. Prompt assessment is also sensible if bleeding occurs with an ongoing change in bowel habit, unintended weight loss, or a new abdominal lump. These features need evaluation regardless of the suspected cause.

Ask whether an examination is needed to confirm the source of bleeding, whether constipation or medicines could be contributing, and what changes should trigger an earlier review. Mention blood-thinning medicines, bowel conditions, and any family history of bowel disease.
