How common is blood in stool in bowel polyps?

Polyps are growths on the lining of the bowel. A polyp can bleed when stool passes over it, and the blood may be bright red, mixed with stool, or only found on a test. Many polyps cause no noticeable symptoms. Haemorrhoids, anal fissures, inflammation, infection and other bowel conditions can also cause blood in stool, so the symptom cannot confirm bowel polyps on its own.

Arrange a medical assessment for new, repeated or unexplained bleeding. Note the colour of the blood, whether it is on paper or mixed through stool, changes in bowel habit, abdominal discomfort, tiredness, and any medicines that can affect bleeding. A clinician may examine the rectal area and discuss tests that look for a bowel source. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice.

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy, does not stop, or comes with fainting, marked dizziness, severe abdominal pain, black tar-like stool, vomiting blood, confusion, or weakness. Prompt care is also appropriate when bleeding occurs with unexplained weight loss, persistent change in bowel habits, or increasing fatigue.

Ask what features of your bleeding need examination, whether a stool test or bowel examination is suitable, and what symptoms should prompt earlier review. Mention any family history of bowel disease and any blood-thinning medicine, anti-inflammatory medicine, or supplements you use.
