How common is blocked nose in common cold?

A cold can inflame the inside of the nose, causing tissues to swell before there is much discharge. This is why a nose may feel obstructed even when blowing it does not bring much mucus out.

Sore throat, sneezing, cough, tiredness, and a runny nose can occur as well. Blocked nose does not by itself confirm a cold, because allergies and other nasal conditions can produce similar congestion.

Rest, fluids, and warm drinks can make a cold easier to manage. Saline spray or rinse may loosen secretions, and humid air may feel soothing for some people. Follow product labels carefully before using over-the-counter medicines.

If using a medicated decongestant spray, ask a pharmacist about safe use and avoid extending use beyond the label directions, as congestion can rebound after prolonged use.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are getting worse instead of settling, if fever is persistent, or if the blocked nose remains troublesome after other cold symptoms have resolved. Children, older adults, and people with significant medical conditions may need earlier advice.

Seek urgent care for shortness of breath, chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. These are not routine cold symptoms and need assessment.

Ask whether your symptoms still fit a common cold and which treatments are appropriate alongside your regular medicines. Mention wheezing, facial pain, symptoms on only one side, or a condition that affects your immunity.
