How common is bleeding in early pregnancy in cervical ectropion?

Cervical ectropion occurs when softer cells from inside the cervical canal are visible on the outer surface of the cervix. Pregnancy hormones can make this area more sensitive and likely to bleed with contact. Bleeding in early pregnancy can also have other causes, including changes in the cervix, infection, or a problem with the pregnancy, so it should not be self-diagnosed.

Tell your maternity team or clinician about any bleeding during pregnancy. Note when it began, whether it followed sex or an examination, its colour and flow, and whether you have pain. Your clinician may examine the cervix and decide whether pregnancy checks or infection testing are appropriate.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, dizziness, fever, or feeling very unwell. Contact your maternity team promptly for any new bleeding, even when it is light, so important causes can be considered.

Ask whether the cervix looks like ectropion, whether you need an examination or tests, and which symptoms require emergency care. Ask whether sex, examinations, or vaginal products should be avoided while bleeding continues.
