How common is bleeding after sex in vaginal cancer?

A tumour or abnormal surface in the vagina can be fragile and may bleed when rubbed during sex. Other possible features include unusual discharge, a vaginal mass, pelvic pain, or discomfort during intercourse. Some people have few symptoms early on. Most bleeding after sex has causes other than vaginal cancer, so the symptom should prompt assessment rather than a conclusion about diagnosis.

Arrange a medical appointment for bleeding after sex, particularly if it returns, occurs after menopause, or comes with discharge or a lump. The clinician may ask about timing and amount, examine the vagina and cervix, and arrange imaging or a biopsy if an area needs closer assessment. Keep a note of bleeding episodes and related symptoms, and avoid intercourse if it causes pain or fresh bleeding.
