How common is black stools in gastritis?

Bleeding higher in the digestive tract can be altered as it passes through the gut, producing stool that is black, sticky, or tar-like and may have a strong smell. Gastritis can inflame the stomach lining and sometimes bleed, but not every person with gastritis has this feature. Other causes include a peptic ulcer, medicines that irritate the stomach, or swallowed blood.

Some iron medicines and dark foods can also change stool colour without bleeding. Colour alone cannot reliably separate these explanations. A clinician may ask about abdominal pain, dizziness, vomiting, medicines, and the timing of the change, then arrange examination or testing.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if stools are genuinely black or tarry, particularly when the change is new or repeated. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, including anti-inflammatory painkillers and iron. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, but avoid taking extra anti-inflammatory painkillers while waiting for guidance. Note any stomach pain, vomiting, weakness, or change in stool appearance.

Seek emergency care for black stools with fainting, marked dizziness, confusion, cold or clammy skin, severe weakness, vomiting blood, or severe abdominal pain. These signs can accompany significant digestive-tract bleeding. Even without these symptoms, persistent tarry stools warrant timely medical review rather than home observation alone.
