How common is an armpit lump in lymphoma?

Lymphoma can enlarge lymph nodes, including nodes in the armpit. The swelling may feel firm or rubbery and may be painless, but feel and tenderness vary. Infections, skin irritation, an inflamed hair follicle, recent vaccination, or other conditions can also enlarge a node. The presence of a lump alone cannot identify its cause.

A clinician may ask when you first noticed it, whether it is changing, and whether you have symptoms such as fever, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight change, or unusual tiredness. They may examine both armpits and nearby areas and decide whether tests are appropriate.

Arrange a medical assessment if the lump persists, grows, feels hard or fixed, or has no clear explanation. Note its location, approximate size, tenderness, and any recent infection or skin injury. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage it, because this can irritate the area. Bring a list of medicines and recent health changes to the appointment.

Seek urgent care for an armpit swelling with severe redness, rapidly worsening pain, pus, or a high fever. Get emergency help for trouble breathing, fainting, or sudden severe weakness. These warning signs need prompt attention regardless of whether lymphoma is suspected.

Ask what features of the lump are reassuring or concerning, whether you need imaging or blood tests, and how long to monitor it. You can also ask which changes should prompt an earlier review and how lymphoma would be confirmed if testing is needed.
