How common is arm or leg swelling in lymphoedema?

Swelling may begin gradually and can affect one side or both sides. Rings, watches, sleeves or shoes may feel tighter, and the skin may become firm over time. Lymphoedema can follow cancer surgery, lymph-node treatment or damage to lymph vessels, but infection, a clot, injury and other conditions can look similar.

Arrange an assessment for new, persistent or increasing swelling. A clinician or lymphoedema therapist can compare limbs, check the skin and discuss gentle movement, skin care, elevation and fitted compression when suitable. Protect the skin from cuts and burns, and do not use tight compression unless it has been recommended for you.

Seek urgent help if swelling appears suddenly or comes with redness, marked warmth, severe pain, fever, chest pain or breathlessness. These changes can point to infection or a clot rather than ordinary day-to-day fluctuation. Contact your care team if the skin breaks, leaks fluid or becomes increasingly difficult to move.

Ask what is most likely contributing to the swelling, whether compression is appropriate, and how to measure change safely. Ask which skin changes require treatment and whether a therapist can teach exercises or self-care techniques.
