How common is arm numbness and tingling in cervical radiculopathy?

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve root in the neck is irritated or compressed. The resulting sensation may travel from the neck or shoulder into the arm and hand, following the path of the affected nerve. Neck movement, coughing, or certain positions may worsen symptoms, and some people also notice neck pain, shoulder pain, or weakness. The exact distribution matters during an examination. Arm numbness and tingling has other possible causes, so the symptom by itself does not identify cervical radiculopathy.

Keep gently moving within a comfortable range and avoid positions that clearly increase arm symptoms. Vary desk, driving, and sleep positions so the neck is not held in one posture for long periods. A physiotherapist can assess neck and arm movement, teach suitable exercises, and advise on gradual return to normal activity. Avoid forceful neck manipulation while the cause of new or worsening neurological symptoms is unclear.

Arrange prompt assessment for persistent or worsening numbness, new weakness, clumsy hand movements, or pain that limits sleep or daily tasks. Seek emergency care for sudden one-sided weakness or numbness with facial drooping, speech difficulty, severe imbalance, or a sudden severe headache. Urgent review is also needed after significant neck trauma or when walking, bladder, or bowel control changes.
