How common is arm numbness and tingling in carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome involves pressure on the median nerve as it passes through a narrow space at the wrist. Symptoms often affect the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger, although discomfort may be felt higher in the hand or arm. Tingling can wake someone at night or appear during activities that keep the wrist bent. Grip weakness, dropping objects, or difficulty with fine hand tasks can develop. Arm symptoms also have other possible sources, including the neck and other nerves.

Notice which tasks bring on symptoms and take short breaks from repeated gripping or prolonged wrist bending. Keep the wrist in a comfortable, neutral position during work and consider whether your keyboard, tool, or phone position needs adjusting. A clinician may recommend a night wrist splint, targeted exercises, or further testing depending on the examination. Do not ignore steadily increasing numbness or weakness, because prolonged nerve pressure can affect hand function.
