How common is ankle swelling in ankle fracture?

Short answer
Ankle Swelling is a common presentation of Ankle Fracture. It can develop as the injured tissues react after the break and may occur with pain, bruising, stiffness, or difficulty putting weight through the foot.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What swelling can tell you
Swelling may surround the ankle or extend into the foot, and it can make shoes or movement uncomfortable. Its amount does not show how serious the fracture is, and swelling can also follow a sprain or other injury. A clinician uses the injury history, examination, and usually imaging to determine whether a bone is broken and whether the ankle needs protection or specialist treatment.
What to do while waiting for care
Avoid walking on the injured ankle unless a clinician has said it is safe. Keep the foot raised when resting, and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if that feels helpful. Do not place ice directly on skin or try to straighten a visibly abnormal ankle. Remove tight jewellery or footwear before swelling increases, if this can be done without moving the injury.
When to seek urgent care
Get urgent assessment after a significant injury, especially if you cannot bear weight, pain is severe, or the ankle looks bent or out of place. Emergency care is needed for toes that become pale, blue, cold, numb, or difficult to move. Increasing tightness, rapidly worsening swelling, or an open wound over the injured area also needs prompt attention.
Questions for your doctor
Do I need imaging to check for a fracture? Should I keep weight off the ankle, and for how long? What support or cast is appropriate? How should I monitor swelling, skin colour, sensation, and toe movement at home?

Questions people ask
Does ankle swelling confirm a fracture?
No. Swelling can occur with a sprain and other injuries. An examination and, when appropriate, imaging are used to assess a possible fracture.
Should I massage a newly swollen ankle after an injury?
Avoid massaging a suspected fracture before assessment, particularly if movement causes pain or the ankle appears misshapen.
