How common is abdominal swelling in ovarian cancer?

Ovarian cancer-related abdominal changes may occur alongside feeling full quickly, pelvic or abdominal discomfort, changes in bowel habits, or needing to urinate more often. Symptoms that persist or represent a clear change from usual patterns should be assessed. A clinician may perform an examination and arrange imaging, blood tests, or other investigations based on the history and findings.

Book a medical review for swelling that persists, returns frequently, increases, or interferes with eating, sleep, or daily activity. Record when it occurs, whether meals alter it, pain, appetite, bowel movements, urinary changes, breathlessness, and any weight change. If ovarian cancer is already diagnosed, tell the oncology team about new or worsening swelling because it may affect comfort and treatment planning. Do not self-treat with laxatives or supplements without advice.

Get urgent medical help for severe sudden pain, repeated vomiting, inability to pass stool or urine, fainting, fever with worsening pain, severe breathlessness, or a rapidly enlarging and tense abdomen. These signs can indicate a complication requiring prompt assessment.
