How common is abdominal pain in urinary tract infection?

A urinary tract infection can irritate the bladder and nearby tissues, producing pressure, aching, or cramping low in the abdomen. Burning when passing urine, needing to go often, passing small amounts, or cloudy or strong-smelling urine may occur as well. Pain higher in the side or back, with fever or chills, can suggest involvement beyond the bladder. Abdominal pain alone does not establish the cause.

Arrange medical advice if pain comes with urinary changes, persists, or returns. A clinician may assess your symptoms and request a urine sample before recommending treatment. Drink fluids normally unless you have been given a fluid restriction, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because the right treatment depends on the situation.
