How common is abdominal pain in food poisoning?

Food poisoning can irritate the stomach or intestines after contaminated food or drink is consumed. The body may respond with cramping, loose stools, nausea, and vomiting. Symptoms can begin after a meal, but the timing and combination vary. Abdominal pain alone cannot show that food poisoning is the cause, since many illnesses and digestive problems can produce similar discomfort.

Focus on replacing fluids in small, frequent sips, particularly if diarrhoea or vomiting is present. Rest and choose foods only when you feel able to eat; avoid alcohol while you are unwell. Record recent meals, travel, and anyone else who became ill after eating the same food, as this information can help if you need a clinician's advice.

Get urgent medical care for severe or intensifying pain, a hard or swollen abdomen, confusion, fainting, or repeated vomiting that prevents you from drinking. Seek prompt advice for blood in vomit or stool, black stools, fever with worsening illness, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine, marked thirst, or dizziness. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and people with weakened immunity should contact a clinician early when symptoms are significant.
