How common is abdominal pain in acid reflux?

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upwards into the oesophagus. Irritation can create burning behind the breastbone or discomfort in the upper abdomen, sometimes with a sour taste, belching, or symptoms after meals or when lying down. Patterns vary, and abdominal pain may also arise from the bowel, gallbladder, muscles, infection, or other conditions. The presence of pain does not show that reflux is the cause. A clinician considers its location, timing, triggers, associated symptoms, medicines, and health history.

Note when pain occurs, what you ate, whether lying down changes it, and any nausea, regurgitation, or swallowing difficulty. Try smaller meals, avoid lying down soon after eating, and identify personal food or drink triggers without removing major food groups unnecessarily. Take prescribed treatment as directed and ask before starting or stopping acid medicines, especially if symptoms keep returning.

Seek urgent help for severe or sudden pain, chest pressure, trouble breathing, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, or a rigid abdomen. Arrange prompt assessment for difficulty swallowing, food sticking, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or pain that persists or worsens. Recurrent symptoms also deserve review because several conditions can resemble reflux.
