How is breast cancer different in pregnancy?

Pregnancy can make breast tissue feel fuller and can make a lump harder to assess by examination alone. A new lump, skin change, nipple change, or persistent focal symptom still deserves timely review. Ultrasound is commonly used first, and the team selects other imaging and biopsy methods with pregnancy precautions.

Treatment depends on the tumour’s type and stage, the trimester, and the parent’s health. Some chemotherapy can be considered after the early stage of pregnancy, while certain medicines, radiotherapy, and some scans are generally postponed or changed. The oncology, breast surgery, obstetric, and newborn teams coordinate the sequence.

Tell your maternity or breast clinician promptly about a new breast or underarm lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or a change that persists. Bring details about when it began and whether it changes with feeding or pregnancy. Do not delay assessment because a symptom appeared during pregnancy.

If cancer is diagnosed, ask for a joint treatment discussion. Topics include biopsy findings, safe imaging, timing of surgery or medicine, delivery planning, breastfeeding, fertility, emotional support, and newborn monitoring. Avoid starting supplements or stopping prescribed medicines without checking the team.

Contact your maternity or oncology team quickly for fever, wound redness or discharge, uncontrolled vomiting, dehydration, severe pain, or a sudden decline in your condition. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, or heavy bleeding. Pregnancy-related emergencies such as reduced fetal movement or fluid loss should follow your maternity unit’s emergency instructions.
