How is BRCA gene mutation different in women?

BRCA1 and BRCA2 help repair damaged DNA. An inherited harmful change may be passed through either parent and can be present in every cell. It does not confirm that cancer is present, but it can change the pattern of risk for breast, ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancers. Some findings also matter for pancreatic cancer risk.

The meaning of a result depends on the gene, the exact variant, personal history, and relatives’ cancer history. A result labelled uncertain is not handled in the same way as a confirmed harmful mutation. Genetic counselling can put the report into context.

Discuss the result with a genetics professional and the clinician who knows your breast and gynaecological history. They may discuss enhanced breast surveillance, risk-reducing surgery, medicines, and the timing of each option. Decisions should reflect your health, plans for children, menopause considerations, and personal preferences.

Keep copies of test reports and tell the team about new breast, pelvic, abdominal, or persistent digestive symptoms. If a harmful inherited mutation is confirmed, relatives may be offered counselling so they can make informed choices about testing.

Arrange a review for a new breast or underarm lump, nipple or skin change, unusual vaginal bleeding, persistent pelvic or abdominal pain, increasing abdominal swelling, or ongoing digestive symptoms. These symptoms can have non-cancer causes, so they are not a diagnosis. Seek emergency care for severe pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding.
