How bad is a sprained wrist?

Short answer
A sprained wrist can be mild or serious depending on ligament damage, pain, swelling, movement, and whether a fracture is also present.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Injury
- Ligament damage around the wrist
- Possible signs
- Pain, swelling, bruising, or reduced movement
- Assessment
- A fracture may need to be ruled out after an impact
What the injury means
A sprain affects the ligaments that connect wrist bones. A mild injury may stretch these tissues and leave you able to move the hand, although gripping can hurt. A larger tear may cause marked swelling, bruising, tenderness, or a feeling that the wrist is unstable. Pain can be felt on the thumb side, little-finger side, or across the back of the wrist.
A fall onto an outstretched hand can injure a ligament and can also cause a fracture. Symptoms alone cannot always separate these injuries. Persistent wrist pain, especially in one sharply tender spot, deserves an examination.
What to do at home
Rest from lifting, pushing, sports, and movements that increase pain. For the first day or two, use a wrapped cold pack for short periods and keep the hand raised when possible. Remove rings before swelling increases. A suitable splint can limit painful movement while the wrist settles; it should not make the fingers numb, cold, or blue.
Once pain and swelling begin to ease, gentle finger movement helps prevent stiffness. A clinician or physiotherapist can guide a gradual return to wrist motion, grip work, and normal activities.
When to seek medical care
Arrange prompt assessment after a significant fall or impact, or if you cannot use the hand normally. Seek urgent help for a visibly deformed wrist, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, open injury, numbness, or fingers that become pale, blue, or cold. Get checked if pain remains focused over a bone or does not start improving with protection and rest.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which ligament or bone may be involved, whether imaging is needed, how long to use a splint, and which movements are safe. You can also ask when to begin rehabilitation and what signs mean the wrist is not healing as expected.

Questions people ask
Can a sprained wrist heal without treatment?
Some mild sprains improve with protection, rest, and gradual movement, but ongoing or severe symptoms should be assessed.
Should I keep a sprained wrist moving?
Move the fingers gently, but avoid wrist movements that increase pain until an assessment or recovery plan makes them appropriate.
