Hot Tub Rash in the Armpit

The armpit is warm, folded, and often covered by wet swimwear, so water, friction, deodorant, and trapped moisture can all contribute. Folliculitis may cause small bumps around hairs. Other possibilities include [Heat Rash](/conditions/heat-rash/), [Intertrigo](/conditions/intertrigo/), or [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/). Itching with a scaly border, widespread dry patches, or a rash that began after a new medicine can point toward a different problem such as [Ringworm](/conditions/ringworm/), [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/), or [Drug Rash](/conditions/drug-eruption/).

Rinse away pool water, pat the fold completely dry, and wear loose clothing until the skin calms. Pause fragranced deodorants and new creams, and avoid shaving or rubbing the area. Wash wet swimwear before reuse. Do not assume every armpit rash is caused by the hot tub; a clinician can distinguish infection from conditions such as [Psoriasis](/conditions/psoriasis/).

Arrange an examination if pain, warmth, swelling, pus, or spreading redness develops, or if the rash does not begin improving after you stop the suspected exposure. Prompt care is needed for fever, red streaks, rapid change, or feeling very unwell.
