Why Is Hot Tub Folliculitis Itchy?

The rash commonly begins after a hot tub, spa pool, or swimming pool visit. Itch may be accompanied by stinging, soreness, tenderness, or bumps centred on hairs, especially beneath a swimsuit. Scratching can break the skin and increase irritation. Itching alone does not prove the diagnosis: heat, friction, contact reactions, and other follicle disorders can feel similar, so the timing and appearance matter.

Rinse with clean water, pat dry, and wear loose breathable clothing. Keep nails short and use a cool, clean compress rather than scratching. Avoid shaving, squeezing, fragranced products, and another spa or pool visit until the source is addressed. Do not use someone else’s medicine or leftover antibiotics. If the itch is persistent, widespread, or paired with painful pustules, a clinician can decide whether antibiotic therapy for skin infection is appropriate.

Seek medical advice if itching is worsening, the rash is spreading, bumps are draining, or the skin becomes increasingly painful.
