Is Hot Tub Folliculitis Contagious?

Pseudomonas bacteria can multiply in warm recreational water when maintenance is inadequate. After exposure, bumps may develop around hair follicles, often beneath a swimsuit or in other covered areas. The shared water source is the central concern. Normal brief contact with an affected person is not the same exposure, but fluid from open or draining spots should not be shared through towels, clothing, or close skin contact.

Do not return to the suspected hot tub or pool until its water has been assessed and treated. Shower with clean water after exposure, launder swimwear and towels, and avoid sharing personal items. Keep affected skin clean and dry, and do not scratch or squeeze the bumps. If several people developed a similar rash after the same facility, tell the operator and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen.

Arrange medical review for spreading redness, increasing pain, pus, recurrent lesions, or symptoms that do not settle. Seek prompt care for fever, chills, extensive swelling, or feeling unwell. People with reduced immune defences should seek advice earlier because a skin infection may require closer monitoring and prescribed treatment.
