Hot Tub Folliculitis Bacteria: What to Know

The rash often appears after using a hot tub, spa pool, or swimming pool and may be strongest beneath covered skin, such as areas under a swimsuit. Small bumps or pustules can cluster around hairs, with itching, soreness, or tenderness. The water exposure is a useful clue, but other follicle conditions can look similar. A clinician may diagnose it from the history and examination, with testing considered when the pattern is unusual or persistent.

Stop using the suspected pool or hot tub until it has been properly checked and treated. Rinse the skin with clean water, keep it dry, and wear loose clothing. Avoid shaving, squeezing bumps, sharing towels, or applying leftover antibiotics. Mild cases may settle with supportive care, but worsening or persistent symptoms need medical review. If treatment is prescribed, follow the instructions; antibiotic therapy for skin infection is chosen according to the clinical picture.

Contact a clinician if the rash is spreading, increasingly painful, draining, or not improving. Seek prompt care for fever, chills, marked swelling, or feeling unwell, particularly if you have a condition or medicine that weakens immune defences. Urgent assessment is also appropriate when redness extends beyond the bumps or deeper skin pain develops.
