Hot stroke symptoms: what to know and do

A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel bleeds. Symptoms often begin suddenly. One side of the face may droop, one arm may feel weak or numb, or speech may become slurred or difficult to understand. A severe headache, new dizziness, trouble walking, or sudden vision loss can also occur. Heat exposure can cause dehydration and confusion, but it does not explain away sudden neurological changes. Stroke risk is associated with conditions such as hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and type 2 diabetes; a symptom does not tell you which cause is present.

Even if symptoms improve, a brief episode can be a warning that needs urgent assessment. Note when the person was last known to be well, because this information helps the emergency team.

Call emergency services immediately if stroke is possible. Keep the person safe and supported, loosen tight clothing, and stay with them. Do not give food, drink, or medicines unless an emergency professional instructs you, because swallowing may be impaired. Do not drive the person yourself if an ambulance is available. Record the time symptoms started or the last time they were normal, and tell responders about known conditions and medicines.

Treat sudden face, arm, speech, balance, or vision changes as an emergency, even when there is no pain or the person seems better later. Call emergency services rather than waiting for a GP appointment. New numbness and tingling with weakness, confusion, or speech difficulty also needs immediate assessment. A GP consultation is appropriate for follow-up after emergency evaluation, not as a substitute for it.

Ask what may have caused the episode, whether blood pressure, heart rhythm, or blood sugar need checking, and how to take prescribed prevention medicines safely. Ask which warning signs should prompt another emergency call and when follow-up should happen.
