Hot Rashes on Skin: What to Know

Heat rash usually follows sweating and blocked sweat ducts, producing small prickly bumps. Intertrigo affects warm, moist folds and is worsened by rubbing. Contact dermatitis can follow a product, plant, metal, or detergent. Ringworm often has a scaly ring-like edge, while scabies can cause severe nighttime itch and spread among close contacts. Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis are inflammatory conditions that can flare with itch and visible scale. A new medicine may cause drug rash.

Because these conditions can overlap in appearance, note the timing, body sites, texture, itch, pain, scale, blisters, and any recent exposure. A photograph taken in good light can help show how the rash changes.

Cool the skin, rinse off suspected irritants, dry gently, and wear loose breathable clothing. Avoid scratching, hot showers, fragranced products, and heavy occlusive layers while the cause is uncertain. Keep folds dry and use separate towels if infection is possible.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antifungal, anti-inflammatory, moisturising, or other treatment fits the appearance. If a rash followed a new medicine, contact the prescriber promptly and do not stop essential treatment without advice.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, widespread blistering, peeling, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Seek prompt medical review for fever, severe pain, pus, rapidly spreading redness, or a rash that is worsening quickly.
