Short answer

Hot packs for shoulder pain may relax guarded muscles and ease stiffness before gentle shoulder movement.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What heat can and cannot do

Warmth can make the shoulder feel less tight and may help you move within a comfortable range. It does not identify why the shoulder hurts or correct a torn tendon. Shoulder pain can occur with conditions including Frozen Shoulder, Rotator Cuff Tendinitis, Shoulder Impingement, or Cervical Radiculopathy, so the best treatment depends on the examination and pattern of symptoms. Heat may be less suitable when swelling or a fresh injury is prominent.

Using a pack around the shoulder

Use a comfortably warm, covered pack while sitting upright, keeping the shoulder supported rather than compressed beneath your body. Check the skin and stop if the heat feels sharp, excessive, or irritating. Afterward, perform only the mobility or strengthening exercises recommended for you; do not force a stiff shoulder through pain. Avoid heat over broken skin and take care if sensation is reduced. If pain travels down the arm, causes tingling, or changes with neck position, mention this rather than repeatedly treating the shoulder at home.

When shoulder pain needs review

Seek urgent assessment for shoulder pain after major trauma, a visible deformity, sudden inability to lift the arm, new arm weakness, chest discomfort, breathlessness, or sweating. Arrange medical review for persistent night pain, fever, marked swelling or redness, or symptoms that steadily worsen. Stop the pack for blistering, a burn, or unusual numbness.

Questions to ask

Ask whether your pain pattern suits heat, what movement should follow it, how to position the arm, and whether you need assessment for a tendon, joint, or neck-related cause. Ask what changes should prompt a quicker review.
