Hot Lump Under the Skin: What to Know

Warmth and tenderness often occur when the immune system is responding to irritation or infection. A boil is a painful, pus-forming infection around a hair follicle. A cyst can become swollen and hot if its contents leak or the surrounding tissue becomes inflamed. Less commonly, a persistent or changing lump may need assessment for a skin growth such as basal cell carcinoma, which can appear as a sore or bump that does not heal.

Notice whether the lump is soft or firm, mobile or fixed, draining or closed, and whether redness is spreading. These details help a clinician distinguish a local skin problem from deeper inflammation.

Keep the area clean and avoid squeezing, cutting, or repeatedly pressing it. A clean warm, moist compress may ease tenderness and encourage natural drainage when a clinician has not advised otherwise. Cover any drainage with a fresh dressing and wash your hands after touching it. Do not share towels or razors.

Arrange a clinical review if the lump is enlarging, keeps returning, remains after the surrounding heat settles, or interferes with movement. A clinician may examine it and decide whether drainage, a swab, medicine, or another treatment is appropriate. Do not inject or apply strong products to an undiagnosed lump.

Seek urgent medical care if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, the skin turns dusky, or you feel feverish, faint, confused, or unusually weak. Prompt assessment is also sensible for a lump near the eye, nose, or genitals, or for a person with reduced immunity or poorly controlled diabetes.
