What should you know about hot itchy eyes?

Allergy can make the eyes itch, water, redden, and feel warm. Allergic conjunctivitis may occur alongside sneezing or a runny nose, while exposure to dust mites, pets, pollen, smoke, cosmetics, or contact-lens products can irritate the eye surface. Dry air, prolonged screen use, or rubbing can add a burning sensation. Itchy eyes commonly occur with allergic rhinitis, but the symptom alone does not identify its cause.

Avoid rubbing your eyes and wash your hands before touching your face. A cool, clean compress over closed eyelids can soothe heat and itching. Rinse away obvious irritants, pause contact-lens wear, and use glasses until the eyes feel settled. Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether allergy medication or lubricating drops suit you; do not share eye drops or use someone else’s prescription.

Seek urgent medical help for severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, sudden vision change, an eye injury, chemical exposure, or swelling that affects breathing. Arrange prompt assessment if one eye becomes very red and painful, discharge is thick, symptoms follow contact-lens use, or discomfort keeps returning despite avoiding triggers.
