Hormone treatment for prostate cancer

Most prostate cancer cells use androgen signals, including testosterone, to grow. Hormone treatment reduces production of these signals or prevents the cancer cell from receiving them. It may be given by injection, tablet, or a combination, depending on the plan.

Treatment may accompany radiotherapy or be used when cancer is advanced or has returned. It is not the same as removing the prostate. The expected benefit and duration depend on the cancer's stage, previous care and response.

Attend planned blood tests and reviews so the team can assess PSA, symptoms and side effects. Tell them about hot flushes, tiredness, sexual changes, weight changes, low mood, diabetes, heart disease or bone concerns.

Regular activity suited to your health, balanced meals and support for sleep and mood can help with treatment-related changes. Never alter an injection schedule or stop tablets without contacting the prescribing team.

Call your team about severe or persistent side effects, new urinary difficulty, worsening bone pain, weakness, numbness or a sudden change in mood. Get urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, sudden leg weakness or loss of bladder control.
