What should you know about honey crusted skin infection?

A small blister, sore or scratched patch can ooze and dry into a yellow or honey-coloured crust. Impetigo is one possible cause, while eczema such as [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/) can become infected after the skin barrier breaks. Crusting can also follow irritation or another skin problem, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause. More examples are described under [Crusting Skin](/symptoms/skin-crusting/).

Arrange a medical assessment, especially if the area is spreading or there are several sores. Wash hands after touching the skin, keep nails short, avoid picking, and do not share towels, clothing, bedding or razors. Gently cleanse as advised and cover draining areas. Keep children away from close skin contact until a clinician explains when it is safe to return to school or activities.

Seek same-day advice for rapidly spreading redness, increasing warmth or swelling, pus, fever, marked pain, facial involvement or sores near the eye. Get urgent help if you feel very unwell, develop confusion, or notice swelling affecting breathing. Babies, people with weakened immunity and anyone with diabetes should seek advice promptly.

Ask what caused the crusting, whether a swab is needed, how to clean and cover the area, how long it may remain contagious, and whether close contacts or an underlying eczema flare need attention.
