Short answer

A homemade scrub can strip or irritate dry skin, so gentle cleansing and regular emollient use are safer first steps than abrasive exfoliation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Best starting point
Moisturise damp skin with a bland cream or ointment.
Avoid
Rough particles and fragranced or acidic kitchen ingredients.

What dry skin involves

Dry skin happens when the outer barrier loses water and protective lipids. Scrubbing can remove surface scales temporarily, but it does not repair that barrier. Salt, sugar, baking soda, pumice, and rough cloths may cause microscopic irritation and make tightness, flaking, or stinging worse.

Persistent or marked dryness can occur with asteatotic eczema, atopic dermatitis, or psoriasis. Look for clues such as itch, redness, cracks, thickened plaques, or symptoms that return despite moisturising. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Gentle care that helps

Use short lukewarm showers, a mild fragrance-free cleanser on areas that need it, and pat rather than rub the skin dry. Apply a thick fragrance-free cream or ointment while skin is still slightly damp. Emollient Therapy may be discussed when dryness is widespread or keeps returning.

Avoid fragranced oils, essential oils, undiluted acids, and homemade mixtures on cracked skin. If you exfoliate at all, wait until the skin is comfortable and intact, use a gentle product sparingly, and stop at the first sign of burning or increased redness.

When to seek care

Book a dermatology appointment if dryness lasts despite consistent moisturising, interferes with sleep, forms painful fissures, or affects large areas. Get prompt help for pus, spreading warmth, marked swelling, fever, or rapidly worsening pain, because damaged skin can become infected.

Questions for your doctor

Could eczema, psoriasis, medication, or an irritant be driving my dryness? Which emollient texture should I use, and how often? Should I avoid exfoliation completely while the skin is cracked or inflamed?

Questions people ask

Can a sugar scrub remove flaky dry skin?

It may lift loose scale briefly, but rubbing can worsen the barrier problem and leave skin more irritated.

When is dry skin more than simple dryness?

Persistent itch, redness, cracks, thick plaques, or recurring flares can point to eczema, psoriasis, or another condition.
