Home treatment for worms

Worm infections are not all treated in the same way. Threadworms commonly spread through microscopic eggs on hands and household items, while other intestinal worms may be linked to contaminated food, water or undercooked food. The right medicine, timing and need for testing depend on the suspected infection.

Itching around the anus, visible worms or changes in bowel habits can have several explanations. Avoid taking a random deworming product, particularly for a child, during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. A pharmacist or clinician can help distinguish an infection from another cause.

Wash hands with soap after toilet use and before preparing or eating food. Keep nails short, avoid nail biting, wash produce carefully and cook meat thoroughly. Do not share towels, and launder underwear and bedding regularly when threadworms are suspected.

Follow the exact product instructions if a suitable medicine has been recommended. Do not repeat doses or combine products unless advised. Keep a note of symptoms, travel, untreated household contacts, food exposures and any worm or segment seen; a clear description can help guide assessment.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms persist, the infection returns, you have seen a worm but are unsure what it is, or home treatment has not helped. Prompt assessment is needed for significant abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, blood in stool, fever, weight loss or signs of dehydration.
