Home care for whole-body itching during pregnancy

Short answer
During pregnancy, cool skin care and fragrance-free moisturiser may ease itching, but whole-body itching should be discussed with a maternity clinician.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- Use a cool environment and plain moisturiser.
- Do not self-medicate
- Check every oral or topical medicine during pregnancy.
Why widespread itching deserves attention
Pregnancy can make skin drier or more sensitive, and stretching skin can itch. A rash may also reflect eczema, contact irritation or hives. Itching without an obvious rash, especially on the palms or soles or at night, can sometimes signal a pregnancy-related liver problem, so home comfort measures should not delay assessment.
Safe comfort measures
Take short, lukewarm showers and pat skin dry. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Wear loose cotton clothing, keep the room cool, and use a cool damp cloth instead of scratching. Choose mild laundry products and stop any newly introduced soap, lotion or perfume. Before taking an antihistamine, using a medicated cream or applying herbal products, check with your obstetric clinician or pharmacist because pregnancy safety depends on the ingredient and stage of pregnancy.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly for intense or persistent itching, itch without a rash, or itching that is stronger at night or affects the palms and soles. Seek urgent care for jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fever, a blistering rash or reduced fetal movement. Keep a note of when the itching began, where it is strongest and which products you use.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether you need liver blood tests, a pregnancy-safe moisturiser or medicine, and what symptoms should trigger same-day review. Tell them about any rash, new product, medicines, allergies and sleep disruption.

Questions people ask
Is whole-body itching normal in pregnancy?
It can come from dry or stretched skin, but widespread or unexplained itching needs maternity advice because some causes require treatment.
What can I put on itchy skin?
A fragrance-free moisturiser and cool compress are reasonable comfort measures; confirm medicated products with a clinician or pharmacist.
