Home remedies for heat cramps

Short answer
For heat cramps, stop exertion, move to a cool place, gently stretch the affected muscle, and sip a suitable rehydration drink.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Stop exertion and cool down.
- Drink safely
- Sip a suitable rehydration drink while alert and able to swallow.
What heat cramps mean
Heat cramps are painful, tightening muscle spasms that can follow sweating during exercise or work in hot conditions. Loss of fluid and salts through sweat can contribute, especially when exertion continues. Cramps may affect the legs, arms, abdomen, or other heavily used muscles. They may occur alongside Muscle Cramps or Muscle Aches and can be associated with Dehydration.
Self-care and prevention
Stop the activity and rest in shade or an air-conditioned space. Loosen tight clothing and cool the skin with a fan, cool wet cloths, or a cool shower. Stretch the cramped muscle slowly, then relax it; avoid forceful massage or returning to strenuous activity while pain continues. Sip water or an appropriate electrolyte drink in small amounts. Oral Rehydration Therapy may be useful when a clinician recommends it, particularly if fluid loss has been significant. For future activity, take regular cool-down breaks, drink before thirst becomes strong, and allow time to acclimatise to heat.
When to get urgent help
Get urgent medical help if cramps do not improve with rest and cooling, keep returning, or occur with confusion, fainting, unusual behaviour, severe weakness, seizures, hot skin, or inability to drink. Vomiting, worsening dizziness, very little urine, or marked thirst can signal significant dehydration. Do not leave a person with possible heat illness alone or give drinks if they are drowsy or unable to swallow safely.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how much fluid is appropriate for your activity, whether an electrolyte drink is suitable for you, and whether medicines or a health condition could increase your risk of cramps in heat. Mention repeated episodes, cramps occurring at rest, and any recent vomiting or diarrhoea.
