Understanding the symptom
A runny nose is fluid draining from irritated nasal lining. A common cold often brings clear mucus, sneezing, congestion, sore throat, or a mild cough. Allergies can cause repeated watery discharge with itching and sneezing, while influenza and COVID-19 may include stronger whole-body symptoms. A runny nose alone cannot tell you which condition is present.
Mucus may become thicker as irritation continues; colour by itself does not prove that antibiotics are needed. Consider recent contacts, seasonal triggers, and whether symptoms improve away from dust, pets, or other irritants.
Comfort care at home
Drink regularly and rest. Saline spray can loosen mucus; blow your nose gently, one side at a time, and use soft tissues to limit soreness. A warm drink or a comfortably humid room may ease irritation. Wash hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and avoid sharing cups while you are unwell.
A pharmacist can advise on symptom medicines, especially if you take regular treatment, are pregnant, or care for a child. Avoid combining products with the same active ingredient and do not give children adult preparations. Antibiotics do not treat viral colds.
When to get medical advice
Get urgent help for trouble breathing, bluish lips, severe dehydration, confusion, or swelling of the face or throat. Seek medical advice for chest pain, a persistent high fever, severe weakness, symptoms that improve then become markedly worse, or a runny nose after a head injury. Consider testing or guidance if COVID-19 or influenza exposure is possible.

Not by itself. Mucus can change as nasal irritation develops; your overall symptoms and examination guide treatment.
How can I protect others?
Wash hands, cover sneezes and coughs, improve ventilation, and stay home when you feel unwell if possible.
