Home remedies for toenail separation from the nail bed

Nail separation, or onycholysis, happens when the nail plate lifts away from the nail bed. Trauma, tight shoes, repeated moisture, nail fungus and nail psoriasis can all contribute. The detached portion will not reattach to the bed; healthy nail must grow forward from the base. Colour change, debris, thickening or skin symptoms can help a clinician identify the cause.

Keep the nail clean and dry. Trim only the loose edge with clean clippers, smooth sharp corners, and cover the toe with a light dressing if footwear rubs it. Choose shoes with enough room for the toes and avoid picking, pulling, glue, polish or cutting into attached nail. Do not use bleach, acids or untested oils. If fungus or psoriasis is suspected, treating that condition is more useful than trying to seal the nail down.

Book an assessment if separation persists, involves much of the nail, follows no clear injury, or comes with thickening, yellowing, scaling or repeated recurrence. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, a dark mark that does not grow out, or fever. Diabetes, poor circulation or reduced immunity lowers the threshold for professional review.
