Home remedies for tinea: what helps and when to seek care

Tinea is a fungal infection of the outer skin. In the groin, it may cause an itchy, scaly or ring-shaped rash that can extend onto nearby skin while sparing the genital area. Scratching, shared towels and damp clothing can move the fungus to other sites or people. A groin itch is not automatically tinea; irritation, eczema and other rashes can look similar.

Keep the area clean and dry, pat rather than rub after washing, and change underwear and exercise clothing when damp. Wear loose, breathable clothing, avoid sharing towels or clothing, and wash used fabrics regularly. Do not put bleach, vinegar, essential oils, steroid creams or harsh antiseptics on the rash; they can irritate skin or mask its appearance. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose a topical antifungal and explain how to use it; some infections need oral antifungal treatment.

Arrange medical advice if the rash is spreading, very inflamed, painful, draining, repeatedly returning or not improving with appropriate care. Seek prompt help if you have fever, rapidly worsening redness, significant swelling, or a weakened immune system. Diagnosis matters because steroid-treated rashes and conditions that resemble tinea may need a different approach.
