Home remedies for sweaty, smelly feet

Short answer
To manage sweaty, smelly feet, reduce moisture, wash and dry thoroughly, change socks, air shoes out and check for signs of infection.

Where the smell comes from
Foot odour usually develops when bacteria break down sweat and skin debris in warm, enclosed footwear. Moisture can also make the skin between toes more vulnerable to [Athlete's Foot](/conditions/athletes-foot/), which may bring itching, scaling, cracks or soreness. Persistent sweating itself is called [Excessive Sweating](/symptoms/excessive-sweating/) and can need separate treatment.
Ways to reduce moisture and odour
Wash gently, rinse away cleanser and dry the soles and toe spaces carefully. Put on clean socks each day and replace them sooner if damp. Choose breathable shoes, alternate pairs, remove insoles to dry when possible and avoid wearing the same enclosed shoes continuously. A foot antiperspirant may help when applied to dry, unbroken skin according to its label. Avoid bleach, undiluted vinegar, strong acids and heavily fragranced products, which can damage or inflame the skin. Keep shared floors, towels and footwear hygienic.
When to seek care
Arrange an examination if odour persists after hygiene changes, or if you notice scaling, cracks, pain, redness, swelling or discharge. Prompt care is appropriate for rapidly spreading redness, fever, severe pain or a foot wound, especially with diabetes or reduced circulation. A clinician can recommend [Prescription Antiperspirant](/treatments/medical-dermatology/prescription-antiperspirant/) or [Iontophoresis](/treatments/laser-and-energy/iontophoresis/) when sweating remains troublesome.
Questions for your doctor
Is the odour due to infection, sweating or both? What can I safely apply to cracked skin, and how should I prevent it returning?
