Why your nose may be blocked or running
The nasal lining makes extra mucus when it is irritated. A cold or flu may bring a blocked nose with sore throat, cough or fever. Allergies often cause clear discharge, sneezing and itchy eyes, especially after exposure to dust, pets or pollen. Facial pressure, reduced smell or symptoms that linger can occur with sinusitis. COVID-19 can overlap with other respiratory illnesses, so symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.
Comfort measures
Drink regularly and rest. Use sterile saline spray or a properly prepared saline rinse; never share the device, and use safe water for rinsing. A warm shower or humidified room may loosen mucus, but avoid burns from hot steam. Blow your nose gently, wash hands and reduce exposure to smoke, dust, strong scents and known allergens. Ask a pharmacist before using decongestant sprays or tablets, particularly if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure.
When to seek care
Get urgent help if congestion occurs with severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, facial swelling, confusion or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange medical advice for severe facial pain, swelling around an eye, persistent fever, repeated nosebleeds, one-sided foul-smelling discharge, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. Seek advice if nasal symptoms keep disturbing sleep or daily activities.

Yes. Allergic rhinitis commonly causes congestion, clear discharge, sneezing and itching after an exposure.
