Home remedies for stasis dermatitis

Short answer
Home care for stasis dermatitis includes moisturising, elevating the legs, protecting the skin, and following compression advice, while the underlying vein problem needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Skin support
- Moisturise regularly and avoid scratching
- Leg support
- Elevate when resting and keep ankles moving
Why it happens
Stasis dermatitis is an inflammatory rash caused by fluid and blood pressure building up in the lower legs when veins do not return blood efficiently. Skin may become itchy, dry, scaly, darker, swollen, or tender around the ankles. Varicose Veins can be associated with this circulation problem, but a new swollen or painful leg needs assessment because several conditions can look similar.
Practical skin and leg care
Use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat the legs dry. Apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp, avoiding open or weeping areas unless advised. When resting, raise the legs above heart level if comfortable, move the ankles regularly, and avoid long periods of sitting or standing. Do not scratch, peel scale, or apply homemade acids or essential oils. Compression can help some people, but it should be fitted or approved by a clinician after circulation is checked.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for sudden one-sided swelling, marked pain, warmth, chest pain, breathlessness, or faintness. Prompt review is needed for an open sore, spreading redness, pus, fever, or rapidly increasing swelling. A clinician may prescribe Topical Corticosteroids for inflammation and assess venous disease. Sclerotherapy may be discussed for selected vein problems, but treatment depends on examination and circulation findings.
Questions for your doctor
Is venous disease contributing to this rash? Is compression safe for my circulation? Which moisturiser or anti-inflammatory treatment should I use, and how should I protect any ulcerated skin?

Questions people ask
Can stasis dermatitis be treated with moisturiser alone?
Moisturiser can reduce dryness and cracking, but controlling swelling and evaluating the underlying vein problem are also important.
Can I start compression socks myself?
Ask a clinician first, because compression is not suitable for every circulation problem and should fit correctly.
