Understanding a sore throat
A sore throat may accompany a common cold, influenza, COVID-19, allergic rhinitis, or tonsillitis. Acid reflux can irritate the throat without a typical infection pattern. Strep throat is a possible cause, especially when throat pain is prominent and there is fever or tender neck glands, but symptoms alone cannot confirm it. Most uncomplicated sore throats settle with supportive care, while some need examination or testing.
Ways to soothe it
Sip water or warm drinks, choose soft foods, and rest your voice. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe adults and older children who can gargle safely; spit it out rather than swallowing it. A humidified room and avoiding smoke can reduce irritation. Use a suitable pain reliever only as directed on the label, taking account of age, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines. Do not give honey to infants, and do not start leftover antibiotics because they do not treat viral causes.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, or rapidly increasing swelling. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe, keep returning, last longer than expected, or occur with dehydration, a persistent fever, a widespread rash, or marked weakness. Assessment is also sensible after close exposure to an infection or when the person is very young, older, pregnant, or immunocompromised.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit a viral illness, reflux, allergy, tonsillitis, or possible strep throat, and whether testing is needed. Check which pain relief is safe, how to protect household contacts, and what change should prompt reassessment.

Questions people ask
Can warm drinks cure a sore throat?
They can soothe irritation and support hydration, but they do not remove an underlying infection or reflux trigger.
Should I use antibiotics for every sore throat?
No. Antibiotics are useful for selected bacterial infections after appropriate clinical assessment, not for viral sore throats.
