Home remedies for ringworm

Ringworm is a fungal skin infection, not a worm. It can cause an expanding itchy rash with a scaly edge, although other conditions can look similar. Scratching may spread fungal material to nearby skin, while steroid creams used alone can disguise the appearance and allow infection to persist. A rash or scaly skin therefore needs sensible assessment when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Wash the area gently, dry it carefully, and change clothing that touches the rash. Wash towels, bedding, and clothes regularly, and do not share them, razors, or sports equipment. Keep nails short and wash hands after touching the area. Avoid bleach, vinegar, garlic, and strong essential oils on skin. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether topical antifungal treatment is suitable; extensive, recurrent, or difficult-to-treat infection may require oral antifungal treatment.

Seek a review if the rash involves the scalp, beard, nails, face, or genitals; spreads quickly; becomes painful or draining; or does not improve with appropriate care. Arrange prompt assessment for fever, marked swelling, or a weakened immune system. Children and household contacts may also need advice because fungal infection can spread through close contact.
