Home remedies for onycholysis

Onycholysis is a gap between the nail plate and the skin beneath it. The separated part may look white, yellow or grey because air sits under the nail. Trauma, repeated wet work, irritating products, fungal infection and nail psoriasis can all contribute. The detached portion cannot be reattached; healthy nail must grow forward from the base.

Trim only the loose edge if it catches, using clean clippers, and smooth sharp corners with a file. Do not dig under the nail, scrape the nail bed, glue the nail down or tear away attached nail. Wash gently, dry thoroughly and wear gloves for prolonged contact with water or cleaning products. Avoid nail polish, artificial nails and harsh removers while the nail recovers. Photograph changes so a clinician can see whether the affected area is moving toward the tip as the nail grows.

Arrange a dermatology review if separation persists, spreads, affects several nails, or returns after minor trauma. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, bleeding, a dark mark that does not grow out, or a nail that becomes markedly distorted. A clinician may examine nail material or surrounding skin before choosing treatment; home remedies cannot treat every cause.
