Short answer

For mild nausea and an upset stomach, try small sips of fluid, bland food, rest, and avoidance of triggers.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be behind an upset stomach

Nausea can accompany indigestion, Acid Reflux, a stomach infection such as Gastroenteritis, Food Poisoning, or irritation from alcohol or medicines. Gallstones, Gastritis, Heat Exhaustion, Hepatitis A, and Hypoglycaemia can also cause nausea, often with other clues.

The feeling alone does not identify its cause. Note when it began, whether vomiting or diarrhoea is present, what you have eaten or taken, and whether pain, fever, dizziness, or reduced urination accompanies it.

Gentle care at home

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If food feels manageable, choose small portions of plain foods such as toast, rice, bananas, or soup. Rest in a cool, quiet place and avoid strong smells, rich meals, alcohol, and strenuous activity.

Do not force food while actively nauseated. Restart gradually when the stomach settles. Review medicines with a pharmacist rather than stopping prescribed treatment on your own, and avoid unproven mixtures that may irritate the stomach.

When to seek medical help

Arrange medical advice if nausea lasts, keeps returning, prevents normal drinking, or comes with ongoing abdominal pain, fever, weight loss, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. People who are pregnant, older, or managing diabetes may need advice sooner.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening pain, blood in vomit or stool, fainting, confusion, a rigid abdomen, chest pain, or signs of significant dehydration such as very little urine and marked weakness.

Questions to consider

Ask what causes fit the timing and associated symptoms, whether any medicine could be contributing, which fluids are suitable, and what change should prompt urgent review.
